We took our girl to the park today. And I didn’t notice the leaves were changing.

Not until I saw a kid at the park stop, look up, and take out her phone.

So I looked up too.

And there it was. 🍁

The tree had been changing the whole time.

Quietly. Without any announcement.

I was genuinely peeved with myself. This magnificent tree is existing. Beauty in plain sight. And I’m in my head with kids’ calendars, dinner menu and how to sterilize our house and defeat the Zurg league of viruses.

We expect change to arrive with some obvious before-and-after. Something we can circle on a calendar and say: there. That’s when it changed.

But maybe the bigger changes are harder to timestamp.

They happen while we’re in the hustle and flow of everyday life. I say fall is my favorite season. But here I was, outside and oblivious to it.

Green becomes yellow becomes orange.

Don’t wait too long to notice.

Look out. Look up.
